Shantaram demands probe into mysterious sea blasts

Goa’s Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik has urged the centre to send a team of experts to investigate three mysterious explosions along the state’s southern coast heard on 10 February afternoon, in view of the Pune blast.

The locals, from Sadashivgad in Karwar (Karnataka) to Cuncolim in Salcete (Goa) had heard three consecutive sounds of explosions around 12.30 pm.

The locals confirmed that the sound came from the sea.

It has however still remained a mystery as neither the state administration nor the Navy and Coast Guard have succeeded in establishing the source behind it.

Naik in a letter to union home minister P Chidambaram has urged to send team of experts urgently to examine these explosions and get to its source.

"These explosions should not be overlooked in the view of the bomb blast in Pune on Saturday," the letter faxed to Delhi this morning reads.

"Since Goa has been one of the prime targets of terrorists for some time now, investigations have to be done whether these explosions (reported on 10 February) were result of the targets missed by the terrorists," he stated.

Naik said that it is surprising that no state level agency has been able to throw any light on the mysterious blasts. 

"Sea Bird Project of Defence Ministry in North Kanara District adjacent to Canacaona Taluka of Goa being a sensitive area, the Defence Ministry also has to take the incident seriously," he added.

He said if the blasts are a part of tests done by the Sea Bird project authorities, the same should disclosed at least now, as otherwise, every time such blasts occur, we will remain under impression that they are a part of Sea Bird exercise. 

Goa police teams along with district administration officials had scouted entire South Goa coast to ascertain the source of explosions, but in vain.

State government had said that there were no claims of damage after the explosion and had stopped the investigations.

Dear Vishwas,

Your demand is genuine, but no Congress Govt. has ever been in favor of having very strict Anti – Terror law. Congress Govt. has always tried to connect Anti – Terror law with certain community and because it effect certain community, as a vote bank politics (which is absolutely rubbish), Govt. has not made any law. Whatever law was there they have scrapped.

In fact, there should be prevention of terror mechanism and there should be dept. which will be intelligence, investigating, handballing and they will conduct trials of the suspects and accused. This department should be independent and not under Home ministry, strictly / compulsorily this Dept. should come under PM.
