S Chedda, an assistant officer of Comptroller and Auditor General of India, was arrested and remanded to seven days custody, after he was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe.
The mess contractor of the National Institute of Technology at Farmagdi in Ponda tipped off the Central Bureau of Investigation when Chedda asked for a bribe of Rs 20,000.
The officer attached to Mumbai office of CAG demanded a bribe to waive Rs 3.6 lakh of service tax from mess contractor Balkrishna Shetty.
Shetty was of the opinion that the service tax cannot be levied on him as he was serving the food at subsidised cost in the NIT canteen.
However, Chedda agreed to pay the bribe amount and tipped off the CBI.
The CBI officials caught him red-handed while accepting the bribe at Patto in Panaji, sitting in a car.
After arresting him yesterday, he was produced in the court today afternoon.
He has been now remanded to seven day custody.
Chedda has been booked under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
