Fourth acquittal for Mahanand
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 25 October 2010 20:26 IST

Alleged serial ‘dupatta’ killer Mahanand Naik is being acquitted in the fourth murder cases, due to lack of evidence.
He was charged with raping and murdering Shakuntala Kavthankar. Her corpse was found at Kuncoli Mardol.
North Goa District Sessions Judge Nutan Sardessai pronounced the verdict today.
Shakuntala’s skeleton was found at Cunkalya at Mardol on 30 December 2005. Heer body was beyond recognition.
Family members of Shakuntala had identified the footwear and watch. But there was no conclusive medical evidence to establish her identity.
The victim was a house-to-house saleswoman staying at Haturli, Mayem village and the alleged killer had befriended her, they said.
The judge in her order stated that the prosecution failed to provide concrete evidences against Mahanand under section 364 (kidnapping), 392 (robbery), 302 (murder) and 201 (destroyimg evidence ) of Indian Penal Code
This is Mahanand's fourth acquittal. He is being earlier acquitted in Bhagu Upaskar, Surat Goankar, and Nirmala Amonkar murder cases.
The Sessions Judge had recently sentenced him to seven-year imprisonment for raping and blackmailing his wife's friend at Shiroda.
But he has not been convicted in a single murder case till date.
During interrogation after his arrest, Mahanand had confessed of killing 16 women for over 15 years.

With three previous murder cases seeing him acquitted for lack of evidence, the outcome of the fourth and even the remaining cases can be guessed.
With the trail having got cold, convincing evidence gathering is next to impossible. Throw into it lack of motivation or will to pursue and perhaps the circumstances of their kith and kin, belonging to poorer class, no one is interested. Suffice it to say 'dead men (or women) tell no tales'.
And God have mercy on us and protect us all.
