Serial dupatta killer Mahanand Naik has been sentenced of life imprisonment in yet another murder case of Vasanti Gawade.

He was convicted in the case by North Goa principal district and sessions judge Nutan Sardesai on 30 June.

The punishment was pronounced yesterday.

The punishment includes life sentence for murder under section 302, three-year imprisonment for abduction under section 364, five-year imprisonment for destroying evidence under section 201 and five more years of imprisonment for robbery under section 392.

Vasanti was killed by Mahanand in 1995. She was reported to be missing since September. Mahanand, under the guise of getting married, took her in woods at Bethora and killed her by wrapping her own dupatta around her neck.

Judge Sardesai had also sentenced Mahanand to life imprisonment on 11 June in a murder case of 32-year Sushila Fatarpekar of Curca at Bambolim in 2007.

This is the second sentence Mahanand has faced. He was otherwise acquitted in seven cases earlier, including heard by judge Nutan Sardesai, for lack of evidence.

Mahanand has been accused of killing 18 women in 15 years.

The horrifying act had come to light when Mahanand was arrested in 2009 in a rape case. He has already been sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment in the rape case.

The modus operandi of Mahanand was to lure girls from economically weaker background with a marriage proposal, take them to secluded places, rape them, steal their gold ornaments and then kill them by wrapping their own dupatta around their neck.
