Mahanand convicted in second murder case

Dupatta serial killer Mahanand Naik is convicted in a second case of murder, this time for killing Vasanti Gawade.
The sentence would be pronounced on Monday, 4 July.
Both the convictions have been ordered by North Goa principal sessions judge Nutan Sardesai.
Vasanti was killed by Mahanand in 1995. She was reported to be missing since September. Mahanand, under the guise of getting married, took her in woods at Bethora and killed her by wrapping her own dupatta around her neck.
Vasanti’s cousin Ramnath Gawade was one of the prime witness among 12 witnesses. He had seen Mahanand meeting Vasanti on several occasions while also taking her in his rickshaw on the day she was killed.
The case was investigated by PSI Sachin Panarkar under the supervision of Ponda PI C L Patil.
Patil had unearthed the horrifying acts of Mahanand in 2009, after arresting him in a rape case. Mahanand has already been sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment in the rape case.
The custodial interrogation by Ponda PI C L Patil however had revealed the shocking incidents of serial killings by Mahanand, around 16 murders in 15 years since 1995.
Judge Sardesai had sentenced Mahanand to life imprisonment on 11 June in a murder case of 32-year Sushila Fatarpekar of Curca at Bambolim in 2007.
