SC directs all states to follow Goa scheme to compensate rape victims

Goa’s scheme on paying compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victims of rape and sexual exploitation came under praise by the Supreme Court, asking all state governments and union territories to emulate it, stressing that there should be a “uniform scheme” of compensation, at least to the physically handicapped victims.
The Bench of Justices M Y Eqbal and Arun Mishra asked the states to consider for implementation the scheme framed by the state of Goa for the rape victim compensation while dismissing the petition of a rapist from Chhattisgarh sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually exploiting a blind girl on the false promise of marrying her.
