Contractor Vishwas surrenders, Dy Coll on 10-day police remand

Vishwas Desai, contractor of the collapsed Canacona building, finally surrendered at the police station today morning.
He was absconding from the day one five-storeyed building of Ruby Residence at Chaudi, collapsed on 4 June, killing 32 workers and injuring 22.
Canacona police immediately arrested Desai. He will be produced before Canacona JMFC tomorrow, seeking remand.
His anticipatory bail was rejected twice by two different district and sessions judges, first on technical grounds and second on the basis of the criminal charges of conspiracy to kill, culpable homicide, criminal negligence etc.
Prashant Shirodkar, Canacona deputy collector and Canacona municipality chief officer, has been remanded to 10-day police custody.
He was arrested yesterday as his role in the criminal mishap came to the fore during police investigations.
Shirodkar otherwise himself had filed a police complaint, on behalf of the state, as the deputy collector after the mishap occurred against all those responsible for the criminal mishap.
His hand in illegally approving the Ruby Residency project, as the municipal chief officer, came to light later during investigations.
Prakash Bandodkar, the deputy town planner, has already been arrested and remanded to police custody.
Order on the anticipatory bail of Ajay Desai, the Canacona municipal engineer, would be passed tomorrow.
This is the first time four government officials have been arrested in one case of criminal negligence, which has resulted into deaths of over 30 people.
Meanwhile, builders and owners of Bharat Developers - Pradeep Singh Birring and Jagdeep Kumar Seghal – are still absconding.
After declaring them as proclaimed offenders, Canacona police have put up posters in all public places with their photographs.
