Collapsed building was opposed as illegal

Phase I of Ruby Residency

The building that collapsed in Canacona today afternoon killing many workers has been in controversy over several years now due to alleged illegalities, political patronage and one such collapse of the slab of the same building last year.

In spite of stiff opposition to the project of Ruby Residency, the ‘powerful’ builder has apparently managed to construct and sell both its phases while the tragedy occurred today in the second phase of the project.

The five-storey building that collapsed today afternoon was part of the sold out second phase.

Bharat Developers, the same builder, has also completed two phases of yet another project Bharat Heights, near Chapoli dam.

While both these projects are residential in nature, Palolem Plaza, yet another commercial project of Bharat Developers has been opened for sale by the builders.

All the three projects have been promoted as either at Palolem beach or in the close vicinity of the beach, which is a world attraction.

As its websites states, Bharat Developers and Realtors Pvt Ltd belongs to one British NRI, having 15-year experience in European design and standards while another partner is a Navi Mumbai-based real estate developer.

With both the phases of both the projects sold out, the website states that its ‘family’ now consists of 350 households.  

Most controversial among these was the Ruby Residency, which was constructed by cutting the hillock behind Chaudi, the market place of Canacona taluka, and even the paddy fields in the area were converted.

 

While the locals opposed the environmental destruction, it is alleged the local politicians belonging to the Assembly as well as the Canacona municipality managed to get all the permissions to the project.

Ruby Residency, the first phase of which is ready to move, is now caught up in a controversy since its four floors collapsed today afternoon, killing several workers and injuring seriously the rest.

The Residency, having one, two and three bedroom flats, also provides a swimming pool, pool-side restaurant, club house with gymnasium, badminton and basketball court, garden and children’s play area.

Bharat Heights, another project in two phases at Chapoli dam, has flats with independent gardens and even penthouses.

The Palolem Plaza however has commercial shops as well as high quality resort style apartments, with a swimming pool and other posh amenities.
