A leading business school in the state, Goa Institute of Management (GIM), will train around 2,500 volunteers for Lusofonia Games to be held in Panaji from January 18 to 29.
GIM faculties have developed a module to train the volunteers depending on their specific roles during the Portuguese Commonwealth Games.
The training of volunteers will start from December, GIM director Dr Sunil Rai said.
Around 10 faculty members will be involved in the training that would take place in four locations: Ribandar campus, Vasco, Panjim and Margao.
College students have shown interest to volunteer for the event, which will happen for the first time in India wherein 12 Portuguese speaking nations would participate.
"We will train volunteers, certify trainers and ensure quality in the training process, including the constant evaluation of trainers," Rai said.
Lusofonia Games chief executive officer Keshav Chandra said the volunteers have been divided into three categories for the games: general, venue specific and role specific.
General and venue specific volunteers include students who have registered with them.
The volunteers will be in age group of 18–25 years. About 400 sports specific volunteers are being sourced by local sports bodies and 270 security volunteers from Goa police and Home Guards, he said.
The general training is designed to introduce the volunteers to Lusofonia Games, location of the venues and various roles involved in the event, Rai said.
The volunteers are being groomed and trained in behavioural and communication skills.
"Additionally they will receive specific training depending on the function areas they are being placed at such as spectator services, accreditation, technology, transport, workforce operations and others," he added.
