Goa's boxer children watch 'Mary Kom' screening

Around 80 Goan boxers - boys and girls - along with coaches watched the screening of 'Mary Kom' movie, to get further inspiration.

The boxers were selected by coaches on the basis of performance and attendance.

The movie tickets were sponsored by Chairman of Dempo Dempo Sports Club, Shrinivas Dempo.

Goa Amateur Boxing Association has been trying to motivate boxers through various activities including one day tournaments.

Secretary Clyde Lobo said, “We are happy that a film has been made on boxing which shows the struggle a boxer goes through. I am sure this film will motivate our boxers and help them remained focus to the sport and will help them achieve no less than what Mary Kom has achieved.”

Coach Pravin Shirodkar said, “Though we train the boxers and do our best, boxers need to remain disciplined and focus. We all knew about Mary Kom’s story, but the boxers have got an insght into it and will perhaps keep the movie in mind while they practice.”

Boxers from centres like Panaji, Saligao, Mapusa, Vasco, Margao, Peddem, Porvorim and other places were enthusiastic and eager to watch the movie. They all came out of the auditorium with newly found confidence and zeal.

“I just won against an Air Force Boxer last week which gave me a high. Now after watching the movie, I am not going to stop but improve my game and fitness levels.” Ganesh B. K.

Meanwhile,  in Goa too preparations are on in full swing to ensure that Goan boxers- both men and women clinch medal at the upcoming Senior women’s nationals to be held in Raipur from October 10- 16 and men’s nationals to be held later in October from October 26- November 2nd.

This is also in view of preparation for the National Games in Kerala which will be held early 2015.

“We are organising one day tournaments with various states and units to give our Goan boxers exposure and understand how to improve their game”, said vice president Lenny Da Gama adding that the boxers have not had national exposure and need to maintain standard in order to get medals and qualify for the national games.

Recently, the Indian Air Force team was invited for a one day tournament. Goa won the runners up trophy as only two boxers of the seven, Deva Naik and Ganesh B K won medals.  

On September 25th Goa will host the senior men’s team from Tamil Nadu for a similar one day tournament. On October 5th the Army Sports Institute team will be down to train the Goan boxers and will play against the senior Goa men’s team for a one day tournament.These tournaments are being organised by Goa Amateur Boxing Association with the supports of Sports Authority of Goa and Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
