Each Goan student costs Rs 40 K
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 23 April 2013 20:55 IST

Goa spends Rs 40,000 on each student, only up to SSC level.
This was disclosed by chief minister Manohar Parrikar, also the education minister, while speaking on secondary education today.
The total amount government spends on education – from Std I to Std X – is Rs 868 crore, he informed the House.
Almost 2.20 lakh students study from primary to secondary level in a 14-lakh strong state of Goa.
He also said that teaching community today is highly paid, compared to government clerks.
Primary teacher, he said, starts earning Rs 27,000 at an entry point, compared to the Lower Divisional Clerk who starts the career in the government with a salary of around Rs 14,000.
“Teacher has to be paid more, but then I also expect equally good amount of dedication from this teacher”, he said.
Parrikar also appealed to the teaching community to take up education as a mission and not mere service to get good salary.
