North India has no woman-loving culture: Rabbi

In the backdrop of the Delhi gangrape case, noted singer-songwriter Rabbi Shergill feels that women-loving culture is absent in the Northern part of our country, and a push is needed on part of the government to bring a change in this attitude.

"Up North, we don't particularly have a women-loving culture. Women have to think twice while going out," Shergill told.

However, in Goa and Maharashtra, they have a nice women respecting culture, he noted.

The Bulla Ki Jaana singer partly attributed this women-hating behaviour to historical reasons.

"In Delhi and surrounding areas, we never had women respecting culture may be because of historic reasons. We had to suffer so many invasions where foreign men would take away women. Due to this, we ended up looking at them as a reason for our downfall," he explained.

"Now those reasons have vanished and we require a great push on the part of the government to bring a change where women are respected," Shergill said in Panaji yesterday.

Being a brother to four sisters, the musician said he understood the daily difficulties of a woman, when she goes out.

Rabbi is a good singer. But then he need not be taken seriously in other spheres of life.

Rapes have nothing to do with culture or overall attitude of the people. Rapes occur in all parts of India and that too in good numbers. In rural areas it is the rich landlord and powerful people who exploit women and in cities it is the sex maniacs. The reason why cities like Delhi feature on top is because the women their go and report it in the stations where as in Madhya Pradesh they dont. (Despite that MP tops the Rape chart.)

Rapes is a phenomenon that has occurred in all geographical areas and across all times in very large number. The only way to reduce it is by better law enforcement and not by blaming it on atttitude and culture.

The dual scourge of hunger and malnutrition will be truly vanquished not only when granaries are full, but also when people's basic health needs are met and WOMEN ARE GIVEN THEIR RIGHTFUL ROLE IN SOCIETIES - Gro Harlem Brundtland

Rabbi Shergill deserves credit for saying what is the truth in northern parts of India. I have observed this myself.

The greatness of a city or place is measured by the safety women have in moving freely even at night without any man accompanying her.
