Nigerians have become a matter of debate once again with a 41-year old Nigerian arrested by Goa police on the charges of kidnapping and raping a woman.
Tourism minister Dilip Parulekar, who represents Saligao constituency near Calangute, has alleged that young Nigerians coming to India deliberately commit crimes, in order to extend their stay here.
Kenneth Upwegdha from Nigeria was nabbed by Goa police today at Panvel in Goa-Mumbai train.
He, along with another accomplice, allegedly abducted a 31-year old woman and then Kenneth allegedly raped her at a rented room in Assagao, a village adjacent to Mapusa town.
While reacting to this incident, Parulekar said the Nigerians commit all such kind of offences and get an FIR registered against them, so that they can stay here and continue their drug trade.
He has also urged his BJP-led central government to change the rules so that such ‘criminal’ Nigerians could be deported without any hassles.
The issue of deportation had come to the fore two years ago when Nigerians had blocked a national highway at Porvorim in Goa after one of their colleagues was found murdered in a gang war.
Some of the coastal MLAs had alleged that the murder was a result of a gang war between drug traders.
The Nigerians on the hand had claimed that the student was unnecessarily killed by a gang.
It was also rumoured that some of the coastal politicians were upset because the Nigerians carry on the drug trade ‘independently’.
Incidentally, the northern coastal belt is today dominated by the BJP legislators, beginning with chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar in Mandrem, ministers Dayanand Mandrekar and Parulekar in Siolim and Saligao and MLA Michael Lobo in Calangute.
