A Nigerian national was today arrested for possessing a cocktail of drugs at Calangute village, police said.

Okoh Ogbannaya Mikel(33) was arrested when he was found carrying cocaine, ganja and charas at the football ground in Calangute.

Police were investigating whether he was a consumer or peddler of the drugs, Inspector Nolasco Raposo said.

A case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Nigerians are constantly making the news for notorious reasons. Sometimes you hear about Nigerian scammers in India or Nigerian drug dealers in Thailand or Nigerian fraudsters in Malaysia. More often than not, the news written about Nigerians abroad is very negative and the comments from readers are often inflammatory. It is logical to suppose that all of the negative press has a huge impact on all Nigerians abroad. If most people only read bad stories about Nigerian men, it goes to follow that most people will have prejudices upon first encountering a Nigerian. I think this would make it harder to be a Nigerian in a foreign country who is trying to live legitimately and escape stereotypes. There is something that can feasibly be done: the media could report balanced stories on Nigerians, highlighting the positive achievements, as well as discussing the criminal aspect. This is yet to be seen.
