Women dominate over 80% polling in Panachayats
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 16 May 2012 19:44 IST

Maintaining the same spirit of Assembly poll, villagers all over Goa came out in a large number today to elect their panchayat members, crossing 80 per cent voting.
The polling was by and large peaceful, said state elecltion commission secretary P Dangui.
The voter turnout was a positive indication as the last panchayat polls had recorded only 72 per cent.
But today the voting percentage had crossed 70 by 4 pm itself.
According to the SEC, females have surpassed the males in most of the villages.
Highest number of voting was recorded in Pedne and Bicholim in North Goa and Dharbandora in South Goa.
Though the SEC has kept two days for counting, it would try and finish by tomorrow night all the panchayats.
The SEC has thus set up 13 centres with 21 halls and 1000 personnel in 12 talukas to speed up counting.
Bardez, having largest number of panchayats, has set up two counting centres.
All the counting centres are located at taluka town.
In case of a tie, said Dangui, the winner would be decided by a lot.
