184 panchayats going for polls tomorrow

Elections for 184 village panchayats would be held tomorrow, from 8 am to 5 pm.

Total 5934 candidates would contest for 1483 seats, spread across length and breadth of Goa.

19 members have already been elected unopposed, including 10 in South Goa and nine in North Goa.

This includes four in Salcete and three each in Quepem and Canacona talukas in the South whereas four in Bardez, three in Sattari and two in Pernem in North Goa.

The state election commission is geared up for the elections with 6000 election personnel, along with 40 executive magistrates as well as district and taluka observers.

Police force of around 1500 has also been deployed at 1150 polling centres as well as for patrolling and to maintain law and order.

“We have identified 43 sensitive and nine hyper-sensitive booths which would be monitored with total attention”, said Dr M Modassir, the state election commissioner.

Election for Calangute panchayat has been postponed to 21 May, due to discrepancies found in delimitation and reservation of wards.

Goa has total 189 panchayats.

However, elections for Taleigao, Halarn, Chandel-Hassapur and Casarvarnem would be held later as it has not yet completed term of five years.

Counting for all the panchayats would be held on 17 and 18 May.
