Small industry demands probe into IDC land allotment

Goa Small Industries Association (GSIA), a body of small and medium scale industries, has asked for an independent commission of inquiry to probe a multi-crore scam in the allotment of plots by state-run Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC).

GSIA, which lodged a police complaint about the scam last week, contends that industrial plots were being transferred illegally while several small and medium scale industrialists are waiting for allotment.

Association's president, Shekhar Sardesai, said that GIDC had fraudulently transferred at least 250 plots, measuring from 5,000 sq mt to 30,000 sq mt. GSIA's representative is on the Board of Directors of GIDC.

But the association claimed that it was kept in the dark as these allotments never figured in board's minutes of meetings.

The minutes were altered, it alleged. After GSIA's police complaint against GIDC Chairman Babu Kavlekar (Congress legislator from Quepem) and other office bearers, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat personally looked into the affair.

Kamat held meetings of GIDC and GSIA, and acceded to four out of the six major demands, which includes setting up of screening committee before any plot is allotted.

Sardesai said GSIA was happy with the Chief Minister's intervention.

The GSIA members, who have pressed for action against government officers in GIDC, however, have refused to demand ouster of Kavlekar.

Is it necessary for every Politician to use each and every opportunity to get connected to some or other manner to a scam? Does all this not create an impression in the minds of the common man that the politicians do enter every organization only with the intention of creating a scam?

No morality, no ethics, no ideologies, just plain greed......
