52 Vasco students food poisoned, hospitalised

Almost 52 students have been hospitalised in Vasco due to food poisoning that caused from the mid-day meal.

Two of the students are in a critical state, officials said.

Some students of Murgao High School today complained of vomitting after consuming food, given to them under the mid-day meal scheme at school.

Police said that two students, who are in a critical state, are being treated at Goa Medical College and Hospital, while 50 others were admitted to Chicalim Primary Health Centre near Vasco.

School authorities stated that initially 10 students were complained of health problems due to the food.

The number then went up to 23 by afternoon and by evening, as many as 52 students had to be given medical treatment.

Police have registered a complaint against Ganesh Self Help Group, an NGO, which has the tender to cook and serve food for the mid-day meal scheme.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahesh Gaonkar said that SHG Chief Urmila Salgaoncar is absconding.

"We are on look out for her. We will arrest her, when we find her," Gaonkar said.

Police said that Salgaoncar was also booked in August 2009, for supplying unhygienic food to the students.

Deputy Director Anil Powar told PTI that Education Minister Atanasio Monserratte has ordered a probe into the incident.

"We have sent a team to Vasco, which is conducting an inquiry into the incident," Powar said. Under the mid-day meal scheme, various SHGs have been given the contract to cook food for school children.

It is the right of these children to get the best possible health care available.

Given a choice the parents of these children would want the best health care possible in Goa/India. Govenrmnet is also very gracious in granting the wishes of parents.

As for the cost of treatment, it can be legally recovered from the food supplier(provided there is a proper legal agreement with the food supplier).

The little kids are innocent and helpless and depend on the elderly to take care of them. Supplying good hygienic food is essential to avert any major disasters. The selection of the supplier needs to be done on merit and not any other consideration.. The concerned representative of the Education Department in each Taluka- needs to be held responsible for selecting the proper agency for supplying the food to the kids....

Why can't the authorities supply uncooked or packed food such as cookies, fruits, biscuits, cans or other such tested food items instead of insect-infested and unhygienic food items.

I learnt through reliable sources in Goa that many of these so-called 'self help groups' supplying paav bhaji and pulao to the kids are run by congress party stooges who are after some quick easy money at the cost of innocent kids health. What's Monseratt is up to?
