Rane-led Cong allaince to stake claim

Pratapsing Rane, the state opposition leader, is likely to take over as the new chief minister of the alternative government that would be sworn in shortly.

Following dismissal of the Manohar Parrikar government, the Congress-led United Legislature Party would now stake claim to form the government.

They are meeting at the Congress House here to formally elect the legislature party leader, before staking the claim.

The Congress leaders, though in a hurry, are still not clear whether Governor S C Jamir would invite them to form the government tonight.

If elected, Rane would be made the chief minister for the fourth time, since 1980. After completing two terms consecutively, his third government was toppled in 1990, within 75 days. He was then again made the chief minister in 1994, to be toppled after over three and a half years.
