Students agitate; CM disapproves of Harmalkar’s hate-speech

While Goa University students demanded public apology from him in five days, Goa chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar has disapproved disgraceful remarks of Sanjay Harmalkar, chairman of state-run Institute Menezes Braganza.

Goa University PG Students’ Union today staged a demonstration in front of the IMB building in Panaji while CM later told the media that the statements made by his BJP vice president were ‘unfortunate’.

Harmalkar, while speaking at the concluding ceremony of national seminar on ‘Sant Sahitya’ (literature by saints) organised by Marathi department, threatened to beat up Kanhaiya from JNU if he comes to Goa University.

The Marathi protagonist also appealed the students doing MA in Marathi not to admit their wards in Konkani schools, while calling Konkani an undeveloped language and it would ruin their career.

“We will not tolerate such kind of hate speeches in the university campus which are also insulting our mother tongue which we are proud of”, said Urvashi Naik, representing Konkani students of GU.

Rahul Naik, president of GUPGSU, has warned that they would come back to the IMB if Harmalkar does not apologise in next five days.

They had marched to his office today morning but Harmalkar was not in his seat.

“while calling Kanhaiya anti-national, Harmalkar here has insulted the Constitution of India by humiliating Konkani, which is today honoured as a Constitutional Language. This is Ghatana-Droha”, said Adv Surel Tilve, secretary of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal.

 

The GUPGSU has has already extended its support to the ongoing struggle of JNU Students’ Union while stating that it would give warm welcome to Kanhaiya to Goa University.

The students today also demanded that Harmalkar should be removed from the chairman’s post since he has insulted the official language of the state and mother tongue of Goans.

Meanwhile, Goa Forward has also termed Harmalkar’s threat of beating up Kanhaiya as ‘uncultured’ which actually discredits the rich legacy of Sant Sahitya.

In a press statement, GF president Prabhakar Timble said Harmalkar even made sick comments drawing Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru under anti-national flag.

“We can only pray for Harmalkar, who claims to be an artist and literary figure, to get well soon”, commented Timble.

Konkani is my beloved mother-tongue and father-tongue too, still I don't think any Goan will disagree with the simple fact that Konkani IS an undeveloped language and it cannot boost children's career.
