People protesting for Fr Bismarque's death probe arrested in Panaji

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 21 November 2015 22:13 IST

Over 100 people were arrested in the capital city today evening for violating section 144 to protest against slow probe into the death of Bismarque Dias.

“Total 105 people were arrested and later released by the police”, Panaji DySP Serafin Dias told goanews.com.

As announced earlier, hundreds of people gathered near Azad Maidan and then marched to the ferry jetty, to protest against police lethargy in conducting speedy probe into the death of Fr Bismarque Dias, a priest-turned-activist.

Most of them had black flags in their hands.

As the North Goa magistrate has imposed section 144 in the whole city of Panaji due to ongoing IFFI, the police immediately moved into action to arrest the protestors.

In the bargain, the police also manhandled some photo journalist and pushed into a police van even one old lady, who was telling the protesters that their action was wrong.

They were however let to go once police realised their mistake.

Sudeep Dalvi, a close comrade of Fr Bismarque, complained that he was beaten up mercilessly by the police.

He was taken to the Goa Medical College hospital and was discharged.

The arrested protesters, including many women, were then taken to Anjuna police station.

The police had filed FIR against them with bailable offences like forming unlawful assembly, becoming part of unlawful assembly and violating the magisterial order.

Calangute MLA of ruling BJP, Michael Lobo, visited the police station to try and get their speedy release.
