Jaitley announces one IIT for Goa, in union budget

Goa will finally get one Indian Institute of Technology, from among the five new IITs the central government is planning to set up.
Union finance minister Arun Jaitley, while presenting his maiden budget in the Lok Sabha today, announced five new IITs in the country.
“I also intend to set up five more IITs in the Jammu, Chattisgarh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala”, he stated.
A demand in this regard was also made by Goa’s BJP chief minister Manohar Parrikar, an IITian himself.
While also announcing five more IIMs in the country, Jaitley said the government intends to set up one IIM in each state, ultimately.
“Five IIMs would be set up in the States of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, Odisha and Maharashtra”, said the union finance minister.
Making these announcements while covering the sector of higher education, Jaitley also announced a world-class centre of higher learning in Madhya Pradesh.
“The country needs a large number of Centres of higher learning which are world class. I propose to set up Jai Prakash Narayan National Centre for Excellence in Humanities in Madhya Pradesh.”
The union budget had made a provision of Rs 500 crore for all these projects.
