NCP accuses Govt of protecting unsafe Canacona buildings

The Nationalist Congress Party has accused the BJP-led government of protecting the unsafe risky buildings of Ruby Residency in Canacona, one of which collapsed, killing over 30 people.
Trajano D’Mello, the NCP vice president, asked at a press conference why chief minister Manohar Parrikar has suddenly reversed his own decision to demolish other unsafe buildings and whom is he trying to protect.
He also flayed Parrikar’s comment that government does not want to incur additional expenditure of demolishing the buildings, suggesting that the government can very well recover the money from the builder.
The NCP chief spokesperson also questioned why the government had constituted yet another committee of the PWD to inspect the buildings when the highly acclaimed experts of the Goa Engineering College had already submitted the report.
The report apparently has pinpointed the faulty design of the whole block of four buildings as well as inferior quality of construction.
“Make the report of GEC public and let the people know the findings of the experts”, demanded D’Mello.
According to him, the PWD committee has been constituted in order to save the buildings from demolition when in reality none of these buildings are safe.
He also demanded inspection of all the buildings of Bharat Developers, whom Ruby Residency belongs to, coming up in Canacona.
Bharat Developers has already sold out all flats at Ruby Residency as well as Bharat Heights while Palolem Plaza – another project at Palolem beach – has been opened out for sale.
According to D’Mello, mere sealing of these buildings is not enough but inspection is important since the same builders, along with the same contractor and the government officials, have approved these constructions.
He also demanded that inspection of the Phase I of Ruby Residency be also conducted, where people are already residing, including sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar.
He pointed out that Tawadkar himself had stated that he is not feeling safe living at Ruby Residency because of the poor quality of construction.
