Tejpal seeks time till Sat to appear before police

Tehelka founder editor Tarun Tejpal, accused in raping his junior colleague, has sought time till Saturday to appear before the crime branch of Goa police.
A police official confirmed that Tejpal’s lawyer has sent a letter to the crime branch office, seeking more time to appear.
Tejpal was summoned to appear before crime branch by 3 pm today.
The police however have not yet decided its next strategy, whether to grant the request or arrest him after the deadline of 3 pm.
Though Delhi high court is delivering order tomorrow on his plea to grant him transit anticipatory bail, his request to grant him immediate relief has already been rejected.
Meanwhile, there were reports that Tejpal left for Goa today early morning.
The news could be true since he has to move for anticipatory bail in Goa court if the crime branch rejects his request to grant him time till Saturday to appear.
In this case, he needs to immediately sign the wakalatnama for his lawyer so that the anticipatory bail could be moved, without wasting time.
Also, as per the new amendment to the CrPC, the accused in such important cases needs to be present in the court at the time of delivering the final order.
It is thus quite possible that Tejpal has headed for an undisclosed destination in Goa since he could travel to Goa till 3 pm, fearing no arrest.
