Goa Union of Journalists has demanded that Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal be prosecuted in a case of repeated sexual assault on a junior colleague, if proved to be guilty.
In a press note issued in this regard, GUJ president Kishor Naik Gaonkar has also urged the investigating authorities not to give any special concessions to Tejpal, on account of him being a journalist.
Tejpal had apparently sexually assaulted his junior colleague, of her daughter’s age, during a THiNK Festival held in Goa two weeks ago.
Tehelka has been organizing THiNK Festival at Hyatt Resort at Bambolim for the last three years.
Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has already announced that they would sue motto file FIR against Tejpal while directing the Hyatt Resort to produce CCTV footage available with the hotel management.
“That a person of the stature of Tarun Tejpal, who is reported to have committed such an abhorring crime, could renege on the values he claimed to have stood for, shakes the faith of not just the journalist fraternity but also that of the public who look up to journalists as watchdogs of government and society”, said Gaonkar.
He said it is very much necessary to prosecute Tejpal, if found guilty during the police inquiry.
“This is absolutely necessary in order to restore the faith of women journalists, who are today a crucial part of the fourth estate, that perpetrators of such acts of violence against women, do not go scot free on account of their positions” he concluded.
