Goa police has succeeded in making the first arrest, a local youth from Arpora, in the murder case of a Nigerian, Obodo Simon.
24-year old Suren Poll was arrested last night in his own Arpora village by the Mapusa police.
He has been remanded to seven-day police custody after he was produced in the court tody morning.
“We have identified even other members of the gang, who are not less than 12 persons”, Mapusa DySP Serafin Dias told goanews.com.
As most of the members of the gang are absconding, the police are searching for them at different hideouts.
According to Dias, most of the members of the gang are locals, mostly from Chapora village.
Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar had earlier said the murder was a result of a gang war between drug dealers.
But DySP Dias seemed reluctant to verify the fact.
“It could be something else. We are still verifying it”, he said.
According to him, Suren was present at the fight that had taken place outside a restaurant at Anjuna same night, where the gang assaulted one Vijayan from Kerala.
Later on, the same gang supposedly murdered the Nigerian boy in Parra.
“We have arrested him in the murder case as members of the same gang have been named in the FIR lodged by the Nigerians in the murder case”, said DySP Dias.
Suren was identified moving on a motorcycle along with the same gang.
According to police, the same gang later went to Parra and had a tussle with the Nigerians.
Mapusa police has also confiscated a vehicle, which was rented out by the gang from a taxi owner Vishal Mandrekar.
Taking clues from all these facts, the police have apparently cracked the murder case while some more arrests are awaited.
