Govt to decide if Com clashes on MoI: CM

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 22 October 2013 23:16 IST

Manohar Parrikar-led government has ultimately decided to keep final decision on the issue of Medium of Instruction in its own hands, if no consensus is arrived at in the consultative committee.

This was cleared by chief minister Parrikar today, after the sitting of the consultative committee, which he is the chairman of.

The committee, which started deliberations since yesterday based on the suggestions invited from the public, is expecting to wind up its every day two-hour sittings by 10 November.

“The government would accept all the suggestions where there is unanimity. But the final decision on the issues with difference of opinion would be left to the government”, said Parrikar.

With the committee having representation from both the groups, for and against giving grants to English medium private primary schools, it is obvious that the vital issue would remain unresolved.

Parrikar, when asked, also declined to reveal when the final decision in this regard would be taken by the government.

While claiming that his government is against giving salary grants to English medium private primary schools, Parrikar has taken ahead the Congress government’s decision to give grants to 137 Church-run primary schools.

MoI was one of the major election issue, which had benefited the BJP to sweep Assembly election held last year, pushing the then ruling Congress to only nine seats in the 40-member House.

In order to satisfy the Church, the Congress had gone against the majority view to give grants to Church-run schools.

As the minorities this time supported the BJP, the Parrikar government also decided to make an ‘exception’ to its ‘principled’ stand and continued grants to Church-run schools.

The BJP with 21 seats has six minority MLAs and two minority independents whom it had supported in the election, that too in Salcete.

Mother Tongue of Goans is KONKANI and Mother Tongue of Maharashtrians is MARATHI. MoI must be English with one subject Konkani.
