SC directs Goa to readmit NEET merit students

The Supreme Court has finally directed Goa government to readmit post-graduate students of Goa Medical College and Goa Dental College, who were given admission on the basis of merit list of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).
Following Supreme Court order to scrap NEET-based admissions prospectively, Goa goverenment had cancelled NEET-based admissions retrospectively, stating that they were provisional admissions.
The colleges had then admitted the students for post-graduate courses, based on its own merit list.
Following this, the NEET-based merit students had challenged this decision, terming it as contempt of court.
Though GMC had told the apex court that all the merit students of state list as well as NEET list could be accommodated for one year, the Medical Council of India had stated that it may not be possible.
Accordingly, the Supreme Court today directed both the GMC and GDC to readmit the students of NEET merit list.
They were admitted for PG medical courses on 24 June based on NEET merit list.
Following this, on 18 July, the Supreme Court quashed NEET, but not for the students passed the national competitive examination answered this year.
In spite of this, on 25 July, the health department cancelled PG admissions based on NEET and admitted MBBS passed out students based on state-level merit.
Though SC stayed these admissions on 30 July, the state government did not follow it, due to which the NEET merit list students approached the apex court with a contempt petition on 6 August.
The apex court has now fixed next hearing on 13 August.
