Romila to deliver maiden lecture of D D Kosambi Chair

India’s eminent historian Prof Romila Thapar will launch Goa University’s Visiting Research Professor Programme, with her maiden lecture on 5 July.
Prof Thapar has recently accepted Visiting Research Professorship in interdisciplinary research at Goa University, related to D D Kosambi Chair.
She is expected to spend about six weeks every year during the next three years at the university.
On Friday 5 July, she will speak on “Contours in Reading Early Indian History.”
The launching session, to be held at the main auditorium at the new Science Faculty Block of Goa University, will be presided over by Goa Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo.
Thapar has already arrived in Goa as a part of her first weekly visit, till 7 July.
During this first visit, she would meet the students as well as faculty to plan out her lecture series and interaction over next three years.
As a part of the Visiting Research Professor Programme of different Chairs, the Goa University plans to invite well-known academicians in the field of liberal arts and social and natural sciences.
The eminent personalities in different fields would offer workshops, discussions, lectures, research mentoring, art installations and music concerts to its students.
All these activities would also be thrown open for general public, including the maiden lecture by 82-year old Prof Thapar.
A teacher throughout her life, generations of historians underwent rigorous training under her guidance at Delhi University and later for two decades at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi.
She is one of the founder members of the JNU’s famed Centre for Historical Studies.
Prof Thapar's works range from Asoka and the Decline of the Mauryas (1961) to The Aryan: Recasting Constructs (2008).
She has been a visiting professor at Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania and the College de France in Paris.
She was elected General President of the Indian History Congress in 1983 as well as Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy in 1999.
Professor Thapar is also an Honorary Fellow at Lady Margaret Hall at Oxford and holds honorary doctorates from the University of Chicago, the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales in Paris, the University of Oxford and the University of Calcutta.
In 2004, the US Library of Congress appointed her as the first holder of the Kluge Chair in Countries and Cultures of the South.
