Beef starts coming from Belgaum
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 15 May 2013 10:51 IST

The beef shortage is likely to be subsided as the Goa Meat Complex has managed to get 36 animals slaughtered at Belgaum and transport to Goa today morning.
“The high court has banned import of animals to Goa, not beef of animals slaughtered from Karnataka or Maharashtra”, Lyndon Monteiro, the GMC chairman, told goanews.com.
The GMC thus plans to continue the system till the high court delivers its final order in this regard.
The Bombay high court at Goa, in response to the petition filed by Govansh Suraksha Manch, had prohibited slaughter of 130 existing animals at the GMC while also banning import of animals from Karnataka and Maharashtra.
As a result, Goa was starving for fresh beef since 22 April, almost for the last 23 days.
According to Monteiro, this would meet the requirement of Goan beef eaters for the time being.
The GMC however, earlier, was slaughtering 70 to 80 animals every day.
According to Monteiro, the Goan traders take the animals to Belgaum municipal slaughter house and get certification from competent authority for anti-mortem as well as transportation.
The GMC then transports it to Goa.
In contrast to 36 slaughtered animals presently brought or GMC earlier slaughtering 70 to 80 animals, the actual requirement of Goa is around 150 to 180 animals.

Well done! Being a tourist state, it is required that good quality beef is available to the hotels, restaurants, shacks etc. in Goa.
Those who are fond of beef have the right to have it. Just because some people are against slaughter of cattle, they should not be allowed to take people to ransom with some excuses.
Let us forget the past. Authorities have moved in the right direction and deserve credit.
This issue was taking a communal turn and it is good that the problem is getting solved.
Hope everything will come to normal soon.
