U turn on long fishing ban on anvil

Goa government may reconsider its decision of imposing 75-day-long fishing ban in the state from this year onwards.
The fishing associations have strongly objected to such a long shutout period.
A meeting has been called by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar during the third week of May to decide on this issue, State Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado told PTI today.
"We may reconsider the decision, but it all depends on the Chief Minister," said Furtado.
The fishing community in the state was divided over the issue with traditional fishermen welcoming the prolonged ban period, while mechanised trawlers has opposed the ban claiming it to be too long.
Furtado said the state government is contemplating the possibility of shortening the ban duration from 75 days to 60 days, instead of 45 days as it was practiced till last season.
Currently, the fishing ban is from June 15 to July 31, every year.
The traditional fishermen have been exempted from the ban, provided they don't have outboat motors attached to their canoes.
Parrikar announcing the increase in the ban period during budget 2012-13 had said that the ban was to ensure that the fish breeding season is not disturbed.
Government has formed a scheme providing compensation of Rs 10,000 for the trawler owner and Rs 20,000 for the outboat motor canoe operator.
