Goa exporting shark fins illegally?
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 11 August 2015 17:53 IST

Is Goa government turning a blind eye towards illegal export of shark fins?
The issue remained unanswered in the Assembly today though the opposition members caught fisheries minister Avertano Furtado unaware.
The issue of banned sharks was raised by Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monseratte.
Union ministry of forest and environment has banned many species of sharks due to its dwindling population.
Furtado did not agree with her that banned species of sharks are available in the fish markets as well as restaurants.
In fact he kept on saying that his officers inspect all the jetties round-the-clock and not a single species of banned sharks is brought to the shore.
“We have told all the fishermen to immediately release these species of shark back in the sea, if found in the net”, said the fisheries minister.
He also said the only shark available in the market is ‘Mori’ (small shark), which we use for Ambot-Tik.
“And what about export of shark fins? “
Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte sprang up.
“Shark fins are exported to China for medical use,” replied Furtado instantly.
“How can you allow export of shark fins when the sharks itself are banned”, Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai caught him in the net.
Speaker Rajendra Arlekar immediately called out another question…..
