Edu reservations to cross half mark
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 02 May 2013 18:39 IST

Once the reservation percentage for Other Backward Classes is raised to 27 per cent, the total quota for reservations in education would cross 50 per cent.
Only half of the seats would be then open for general category.
This was informed by social welfare minister Mahadev Naik in the Assembly today.
Replying to the question raised by Vishnu Wagh, Naik said admissions in 11 professional colleges are given with only 19.5 per cent quota presently kept reserved for OBC.
“However, the government now plans to increase it to 27per cent from this financial year, as announced by our chief minister”, said Naik.
As he informed further, 43 per cent seats were reserved till this date, but it would go to 50.50 per cent once the quota is raised to 27 per cent for the OBC.
Naik however also clarified that no creamy layer candidate would be eligible for these reservations.
Agreeing to his party MLA Kiran Kandolkar’s suggestion, he agreed to set up a mechanism within social welfare department to check whether reservation policy is being followed.
The statistical data provided by the social welfare ministry reveals that 306 seats were allotted to OBC candidates out of total 1609 seats in 11 professional institutes.
