A naval ship hit a fishing trawler off Canacona coast today morning at around 5 ‘o clock, breaking the trawler into two pieces.
Other trawlers in the sea managed to rescue almost 23 crew members on the trawler.
Six crew members are however still missing.
The Coast Guard has pressed into service a helicopter along with divers to trace the missing crew members.
The crew members remained in water floating for almost five hours, till 10 am, wearing life jackets.
“We could not send a distress call since the trawler had broken into two pieces. We only managed to get life jackets”, Krishna Shivpundi, the tandel of the trawler, told goanews.com
The injured crew members are presently being treated at Hospicio hospital in Margao.
The impact of hitting was so much that the trawler literally broke into two pieces.
Shivpundi, working as a tandel for 17 years, also told goanews.com that he had taken a five-minute halt when the naval ship came and hit in a speed.
“All the lights on the trawler were illuminated”, he said.
The naval ship had incidentally learnt to have performed safety demonstration recently.
The fishing trawler - Ana Maria - belongs to Martin Fernandes from Colva.
It had left the Cutbona fishing jetty at 9 last night.
The accident took place 47 nautical miles off Canacona coast.
