India’s official entry into Cannes Film Festival of Digant, a Konkani film, has kicked up controversy in Goa as some filmmakers have accused the producer of misleading the State Legislative Assembly.

Digant team was congratulated by Goa Assembl00y last week for being amongst the three films selected by Directorate of Film Festival (DFF) of India as country’s official entry into the Cannes film festival.

Producer of the film, Sanjay Shetye, however, clarified that the congratulatory motion was not related to the selection into Cannes but DFF selection for the entry at Cannes.

The Federation of Film Fraternity of Goa (FFAG), an organization of the film producers based in the state, today demanded that the Speaker of Legislative Assembly should conduct inquiry into the congratulatory motion.

FFAG Chairman Augie D’Mello has demanded that the inquiry should be conducted whether the House was misinformed by the producer and director of the movie as the film does not feature in the final list of the Cannes.

“This may be actually breach of privilege wherein false and misleading information is provided to the members of the assembly,” D’Mello said.

“I am thankful for the members of the House for the motion which was moved congratulating me and my director Dyanesh Moghe for our movie to be official entry for Cannes Film Festival by Directorate of film festival of India with only three other Indian films,” Shetye said.

He said that it is an honour for Konkani film to be selected as Indian entry for the festival.

Moghe, the film director, admitted that Digant, could not make it amongst the finals for the Cannes as the committee in France did not select it.

The film was for the competition section and we knew that the competition is tough to get through, Moghe said, adding that “he and his crew are happy being Indian selection for such a prestigious festival.”

Digant, a movie based on the life of a shepherd and his son, was selected for Indian Panorama section of Indian Film Festival of India, 2012.

The movie was also selected for Mumbai Film Festival.
