Nustem may become cheaper in Goa

Goenkar may get Goan fish much cheaper, especially mackerels, sardines, prawns and at least 18 types of different varieties we catch in Goan sea.
The fisheries department is planning to open stalls at six towns - Panaji, Margao, Vasco, Mapusa, Canacona and Pernem - to buy fish at wholesale rate and bring it to the market.
Former chief minister Digambar Kamat brought it to the notice of the House the huge difference between the whole sale rate and retail rate of Goan fish.
“Almost 25 mackerels for example are sold at Rs 100 in the whole sale market whereas we are sold only four to five for Rs 100”, said Kamat.
Surprised at this rate, chief minister said the government would go ahead with its plan to open the stalls before next season begins in October.
“These will be government agencies buying from whole sellers, may be five per cent higher than the whole sale price”, he said.
Kamat however demanded to impose a limit on the people buying from these agencies as otherwise only the hotel owners would buy the whole fish at cheaper rate from them and the common Goenkar would suffer.
Replying to another query raised by Kamat, Furtado admitted that no check has been kept on how much Goan fish is exported by trucks or by road.
He told the Assembly that around 43000 tonnes of fish was exported from Mormugao port last year while the fish catch was 90,000 tonnes.
Furtado did not know where rest 47,000 tonnes of fish go, when hardly any fish of the remaining catch comes to local market, that too at a costly price.

I know that a lot of fish goes to Pune.
