Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has dedicated one scheme and another prestigious building to his trusted colleague and former minister Matanhy Saldhana.
Soon after he was sworn in, Matanhy suddenly died on 21 March last year.
Parrikar today announced in his budget speech that the new South Goa collectorate building would be named after Matanhy Saldanha.
After getting all the district town offices in the huge building, which Parrikar termed as a white elephant, the building would be officially inaugurated on 30 May, the Goa Statehood Day.
Parrikar has also dedicated another scheme for fishermen to Matanhy, while proposing to impose fishing ban for almost two and a half months.
He has expressed his intention to increase the period of ban from 45 to 75 days, in order to increase the fish catch.
The fishing ban would be made applicable to mechanised trawlers as well as canoes with outboard motors, said Parrikar.
However, he plans to compensate the fishermen during the ban period – Rs 10,000 to the trawler owners and Rs 20,000 to the canoes with outboard motors.
This scheme would be named after Matanhy, who throughout his life fought for the traditional fishermen and even led a national-level organisation.
Later, when asked about such a long ban in contrast with the neighbouring states, Parrikar said he was prepared to talk to the trawler owners and divide the ban in two slots, providing them opportunity to fish solar prawns.
