CM assures subsidised diesel, but fish strike to continue

The fishing trawlers owners and fish vendors would continue their “no fish” strike even tomorrow in spite of chief minister Manohar Parrikar assuring them temporary relief by providing diesel at subsidized rate at retail outlets.

The national level trawler owners today met agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and plans to meet petroleum minister Veerappa Moily tomorrow in Delhi.

Depending on the outcome of this meeting, the future course of action would be decided.

Meanwhile, the trawler owners continued their strike for the fourth consecutive day while fish market all over Goa remained closed today.

The issue was raised in the Assembly by Velim MLA Benjamin Silva.

Parrikar, in reply, told the House that he has already made temporary arrangement to sell diesel at subsidized rate at retail petrol pumps.

The trawler owners are striking in protest of  diesel hike by Rs 11 per litre.

“Reducing hike at national level is not in my hands, but I have decided to reduce the price at local retail petrol pumps”, said Parrikar.

Goa, known for fish as daily diet, would thus go shivrak (vegetarian) till the fish markets open.

Besides trawler owners, even the traditional ramponkar as well as whole sale fish vendors importing fish from outside Goa have co-operated with the strike.

Goan trawlers are in the business of fishing. It is an commercial activity. They price their commodities as per the demand and supply. So, why should they be compensated with subsidy in diesel pricing? Are they providing fish at subsidized rates?it is waste of public money by doling it to trawler owners.

Please do not waste taxpayers money.

If they are given subsidy, then government must control the fish prices.

hello goa,

though i stay and live now far away from home.

my heart goes to all my goan poeple , friends and more..struggling to get through this fish chaos crippling our goan people by taking away their daily fish supplement.

its high time that all goans come as one force and fight this war against corruption and teach a good lesson to all responsible for this pathetic outcome.

or else this corrupt reign will go on and on..cheating and robbing goan people of their hard earned money.

Why is there a need to provide the trawler owners subsidized fuel for their trawlers,do they provide the goan locals with subsidized rate for fish. We have to shell out 500 rupees for two small black pomfrets ,forget the white ones.the same ones we buy for half the price in dubai.if the government wants to give them subsidy from the taxpayers pockets,why does not the govt check the prices of fish in the market and keep a standard rate. or in coming years the we will only have to dream about eating fish
