Transport urges PWD for accident-free roads

In view of alarming increase in the number of accidents, Transport Department of Goa government has decided to request the Public Works Department to rework the roads to make them accident-free.

Transport Director Arun Desai said here that PWD Ministry would be requested to set up a `Road Engineering Cell'.

"It would be easy for PWD and Transport Department to coordinate with each other because both the portfolios are allotted to same Minister (Ramakrishna Dhavalikar)," he said.

Speaking at a meeting ahead of Road Safety Week in September, Desai said that the rate of accidents on Goan roads was alarming.

"More than 4,500 accidents take place annually on the Goan roads, over 300 of them fatal," he said.

In the financial year 2011-12, there were 4,560 accidents, of which 314 were fatal.

In last three months of current financial year, there were 2,151 accidents, 137 fatal.

Desai also said that state government would implement its decision to make helmet compulsory for both rider and the pillion rider, as it would save many lives.

137 riders and 42 pillion-riders were killed in accidents in the last financial year, he said.

The 2 PWD Ministers Goa has had, Churchill Alemao & Sudin Dhavilikar are the "Biggest " accidents Goa has ever had.

Their loot & Bank Balances, are testimony to this.
