4 including Panch arrested in firearm racket

Goa police have busted an inter-state gang engaged in procuring firearms and arrested four persons including a local panchayat member.

Vinayak Fadte, who had recently won panchayat election from Old Goa village panchayat, was arrested by police and a country-made pistol and few live rounds were recovered from him last night, police said.

Besides, one Akhilesh Gupta (23) originally from Sivan, Bihar, who used to procure firearms from his native place to Goa and his local associates Taufiq Nathur and Riaz Sheikh were also arrested.

Police spokesman said that three pistols were seized from Gupta and his accomplices while investigations reveal that more people could be involved in the racket.

Police said that investigation were being conducted to verify whether illegally procured firearms were used in any criminal activity in the state.
