KBM to start English medium secondary school

Konkani Bhasha Mandal, a premier body of Konkani movement, is starting an English medium secondary school.

The KBM is already running a primary school in Konkani medium for the last three decades.

Opening of the high school in English has become significant in the background of the ongoing medium of instruction controversy.

KBM president Prashant Naik is confident that the ultimate output of the English high school would prove that Konkani medium students excel better in higher studies in English.

The trend in Goa is to learn English medium from secondary level. The controversy however is only about primary education.

According to Naik, a decision in this regard was taken by the general body last year. But the government permission took one year to come.

The high school would now start from next academic year, with standard Fifth. Admissions have already begun.

The demand in this regard came from parents as their children were finding it difficult to get admission in Std V since those schools already run primary schools and were short of seats.

Due to this, parents were preferring to admit their children in other schools from primary level in spite of having benefit of learning Konkani medium in the KBM-run primary school.

Naik felt confident of running a good high school since the KBM students had always fared much better due to a strong background of Konkani medium at primary level.

“The actual outcome would however be visible only after six years, when the first batch of SSC passes out”, he said.

Serafin Cota, former KBM vice president, said the school would focus on environment of Konkani culture to make the student completely relaxed while equally focusing upon latest technological methods including e-learning.

The KBM ultimately plans to construct its own building for the school though initially the classes would run from the existing Konkani Bhavan, which runs the primary school.

The press conference was also attended by Anant Agni, who has left S S Angle Higher Secondary School to take up the task of running this high school.

KBM General Secretary Chetan Acharya and Parents-Teachers’ Association president Sameer Parab also were also present at the press conference.

a subject thought and by which other

subjects can be tackled, understood

and communicated.Clarity of thought

and expression is only possible when

mother tongue. Weakness in any

other subject means weakness in that

particular subject only, but weakness

in the mother tongue means the

paralysis of all thought and the power

of expression.

English is important in secondary schools.

Objective is to have high-level proficiency in mathematics, and the natural and social sciences and science. English as the language of

assessment in the government

examinations and entrance tests in

public schools, colleges and universities, said "The accepted view is that without English language

proficiency, it is difficult for a Goan

to get good jobs anywhere in this,state, country and anywhere in the world. The key to better jobs here or overseas is English.So MoI in mother tongue at primary schools and English in secondary schools. "English is not everything in education but without English everything is nothing in education".

Congratulations! I am a parent who has educated my children from this school.I strongly believe in educating children in mother-tongue.This is one of the best primary schools in Madgaon.I recommend Vidyabhuvan Konkani Shala to all who are proud to be Goans and who want overall development of their children.Here in addition to academics children are also educated to be good citizens.they are trained in sports,dramatics and elocution etc.

Konkani Bhasha Mandal is in the business of promoting konkani 'Bhas' (hallucination?), its literature, culture or satisfying the demands of parents?

So it is an epiphany for KBM that Konkani cannot be a medium of instruction at the secondary level and hence is an inadequate language compared to Marathi and English?

The present problem on MOI was exploded by my articles on Herald published on 14 Dec. 2010 and 26 Jan. 2011. The main point was that upto the age of about 6, a child has different brain center (called primary) formed for the languages learnt, which may be even 4 or 5. Later day languages are different in that another secondary centers are formed and languages learnt are not assimilated AS IN THE PRIMARY CENTER.

Typically, science does not use the arguable word mother tongue, but mentions it as ‘early languages’ or better still, ‘primary’ languages’. These are languages learnt before the age of around seven, in whichever environment, in family, school or neighbourhood, but for all of them human brain forms a primary language center. The later languages learnt in years such as 10 or upwards have a separate secondary language center formed in our brains. Science does not make an issue of number of languages, but it says there could be even four or five primary languages (read mother tongues). These researches were done with a state-of-the art tool very popular with modern brain scientists and called functional MRI or f-MRI. Nature (vol. 388, p 171).

I am not interested in MOI politics and one upmanship.

My request to KBM is that they should start an English subject right from the first standard when the child would be 5, just in the nick of time. Also let there be a teacher speaking to them at least for half an hour in good English even in KG class
