Five persons, including a sailor and his family, were seriously injured in a fire mishap near the Naval colony in the port town of Vasco, police said today.

The incident occurred last evening when a naphtha pipeline near the naval quarters caught fire, following a leakage, they said.

Several fire tenders, which were rushed to the spot, are still trying to douse off the flames.

Navy Goa spokesman Cdr Mahesh Joshi said navy personnel in coordination with the police, fire brigade and other civil authorities are involved in the fire-fighting operations.

The pipeline is located just across Goa's Dabolim airport but flights operating have remained unaffected, he said.

South District Collector Sandip Jacques said around 200 houses around the affected pipeline have been asked to evacuate last night after thick black smoke engulfed the area with several people suffering from breathing problems.

The injured have been admitted to Goa Medical College.Further details are awaited.
