Eng medium supporters file intervention plea

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 01 August 2011 23:29 IST

Parents demanding English as the medium of instruction in primary education have filed an intervention petition in the high court.

The pending hearing on the MoI petition filed by educationist Pandurang Nadkarni began today with the high court tagging the intervention application along with the original petition.

There are altogether five petitions filed in the high court regarding MoI. All are being clubbed together.

The new intervention application is now filed by Luiza Fernandes and four other parents.

Earlier these parents had approached the high court, seeking aid to the unaided English medium primary schools, as they cannot afford the huge fees.

The high court had later disposed their plea terming it infructious after government issued the latest circular, providing aid to the English medium primary schools.

However, these parents have again approached the court as the implementation of the circular is being blocked by the court, pending hearing on MoI petition.

The intervention applications states as follows:

“The statement of the Advocate General before the High Court and the following directions from the court have delayed the implementation of the circular for grants to the English medium schools. The purpose of the earlier relief given by the High Court to the petitioners has been defeated by the inordinate delay in the implementation of the circular.”

Meanwhile, education director Celsa Pinto has filed rejoinder today, giving detail and final statistics of students opting for Marathi/ Konkani and English medium at primary level.

The division bench of Justice S A Bobde and Justice F M Reis has fixed the next hearing on Wednesday.

Parents should first set an example to their children. The boycott call to students not to attend class today the 30th Sept 2011,is detrimental to their education, and goes against the ethics of education.By all means fight for your rights, but not at the cost of tender young minds being kept out of their class-rooms,when exams are fast approaching and portions are not complete,in an education system where funding is more important, than a child who can grow up with a head held high and brimming with confidence and self esteem.
