Special Judicial Magistrate (SJM) Maria Mascarenhas, who had recorded dying declaration of police constable Chandru Gawas, today pleaded in a local court for not handing it over to police.
Gawas (33) had consumed poison on last Friday while on duty at the Crime Branch office and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital on Tuesday.
Police Inspector Ramesh Gaonkar, investigating the case, told reporters outside the local court here that the SJM objected to handing over the dying declaration to police.
Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Sarika Faldesai, who is hearing the case, has adjourned the hearing for tomorrow.
Three senior crime branch officials--deputy superintendent of police Chandrakant Salgaoncar and inspectors Sunita Sawant and Pravinkumar Vast--were reportedly named by Gawas in his dying statement, which claims that he took the extreme step unable to stand harassment by the trio.
Panaji Police have already registered a case of abetment of suicide against Police Inspector Pravinkumar Vast, based on the complaint filed by the family members of the deceased.
Several NGOs and political parties in the state have demanded arrest of the police officers named by the constable.
An NGO, Savera Trust, today warned of holding a statewide agitation for arresting the officers.
United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP), in a press conference held at Margao, has demanded that the officers be immediately suspended and placed under arrest.
