Protesting government decision to include English as Medium of Instruction (MOI) in elementary education in the state, three senior members appointed to Goa Golden Jubilee Year Liberation Advisory Committee sent in their resignations today.

Former Chief Minister Shashikala Kakodkar, senior writer Uday Bhembre and freedom fighter Naguesh Karmali announced their resignations from the government-appointed committee.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat had formed the committee to finalise programmes to celebrate golden jubilee of Goa's liberation from the Portuguese rule.

The state was liberated on December 19, 1961. Goa cabinet on May 25 had allowed English as MOI along with Konkani and Marathi.

The government decision has not gone down well with many people who feel that nobody would opt to learn in Konkani/Marathi when they could learn in English medium.

Bhembre also announced that he will give back the state cultural award, which was bestowed on him in 2007-08.

He has also resigned from Kala Academy's committee and also the Official Language Act committee.

Kakodkar said that the resignations are sign of protest against government's decision.

All Goa Freedom Fighters Association has already announced its protest by boycotting the state government functions on June 18 to mark the Revolution Day when clarion call for direct action against Portuguese was given by freedom fighters.

The freedom fighters have decided to stand outside the Azad Maidan, Lohia Maidan and Kranti Maidan in Panaji, Margao and Ponda where the functions would be held on June 18.

What difference will it make? Shashikala is a spent force and has been towing the line of Vishwa Hindu Parishad over several years. She is a political opportunist who cannot even garner 100 votes. Nagesh Karmali is in search of a platform to blow his own trumpet. He has not uttered a single word on the bogus freedom fighters who get government benefits for themselves and their children. He is a headless chicken without any ideological direction. He represents the typical frog in the well and will blame Portugal for anything.

Udaybab is the only name that can evoke some respect but with the type of friends/ supporters around him, he needs no enemies.

Good to know that the state has already instituted state cultural award to encourage literary/cultural interest in the language and culture of the region.

If a capable perspn has to tame a literary/art interest which has limited economic value, either you got to be financially capable to afford it or be willing to sacrifice.

Indian classical music is preserved and exposed to world by personalities who were groomed not in schools of mass education.
