GMC ragging not serious: Vishwajeet

Goa Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane today said a ragging incident in state's medical college was not a serious issue.

"Ragging in itself is serious but whatever has happened in Goa medical college was not that serious that I need to take any action," Rane told reporters today.

State's apex medical college had to suspend nine students from its hostel earlier last month after they were found ragging their juniors. Police had also lodged formal complaint against the seniors.

Rane said that he is yet to get a detailed report on the incident but he does not think that such an incident requires his attention.

The medical college had formed three-member committee to investigate into the ragging incident in which the students were asked to kneel down and introduce themselves.

"The students are already suspended from the hostel. What more action can you expect?" he questioned.

GMC Dean Dr V N Jindal, present along with Rane, also sought to play down the incident stating that he is yet to receive the report.

Following the ragging incident, the local media was abuzz with the reports of how students, in the past, had to leave the campus due to hooliganism and ragging in the hostel. The health minister today said he has not come across any such incident.

"I will not go by what is carried by the newspapers. Bring me a single complaint and I will act. Even an anonymous letter would do," Rane said.

Ragging can have a very serious effect on the young minds when they are asked to perform certain acts causing them intense public humiliation! Cases of ragging are seldom reported! It should be the duty of every concerned to stop this menace from the campus and to punish the involved however well connected he is!

The effects of ragging are felt by those who are subjected to ragging. What comes to light in all such cases is only a tip of the iceberg as the newcomers are warned by the seniors of serious consequences if the ragging is reported. There are cases in the past wherein some professional colleges the newcomers have committed suicide or lost mental balance due to humiliation caused publicly in ragging!

There have been reports of the newcomers being stripped in public and asked to do acts which cant be described here ! Many students passed out from the professional colleges know about this but feel shy to talk about it as most of the acts which are forced on the new comers are of sadistic nature beyond limits of decency!

And most of the time the students who are found involved in ragging are highly connected pampered kids of corrupt bureaucrats or corrupt politicians!

The menace of ragging has to be nipped in the bud with all severe action so that it doesnot spoil the life of many innocent newcomers!
