Guv seeks report on Rahul Gandhi row

State Governor and Goa University Chancellor S S Sidhu has sought a report from the Vice- Chancellor on the controversy over Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi's meeting in the varsity campus earlier this week.

The direction came last evening, hours after Goa University Registrar Mohan Sangodkar offered to resign from the post owing responsibility for the political event in the varsity premises last Tuesday.

Raj Bhavan officials stated that Sidhu last evening asked Vice-Chancellor Dilip Deobagkar to furnish a detailed report when the latter came to meet him.

"Chancellor has been reading various newspaper reports on the controversy. He has asked the VC to give a factual report on All India Congress Committee General Secretary Rahul Gandhi's visit to the campus," N Radhakrishnan, Special Secretary to Governor, told PTI today.

He said the Chancellor wanted to know the actual fact behind the entire controversy.

Earlier in the day, activists of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha had gheraoed both vice chancellor Dilip Deobagkar and registrar Mohan Sangodkar, demanding registrar's resignation. The activists also included local councillors as well as few local BJP leaders and activists.  

Prior to Rahul Gandhi's visit, the BJYM had marched to the university, protesting against organising Rahul's meeting at the university  grounds. Sangodkar had then clarified that the meeting is organised by the Youth Congress and they had only provided the ground for the meeting. Sangodkar however had withdrawn the circular he had issued to all the colleges to send students for the meeting. "It is an interaction with the students and there is nothing political about it", he had claimed.

However, when Rahul arrived at the venue, he himself told media persons that he had come down for NSUI elections. Along with Rahul, the stage was occupied by chief minister Digambar Kamat, AICC general secretary Hariprasad and GPCC state chief Subhash Shirodkar, besides Youth Congress state president Sankalp Amonkar. Congress ministers, MLAs and other Congress leaders were also present at the so called "interaction with students".
