Don’t piggy-back on Cong to win poll, come and join: Deshprabhu

GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 10 July 2016 19:44 IST

“We won’t tolerate arm-twisting and piggy-backing on Congress to win election. Rather, the like-minded parties and politicians should join and strengthen the party to defeat the BJP.”

This is the way Jitendra Deshprabhu has reacted, stating that he is speaking on behalf of the Congress, as its official spokesperson.

The  issue has once again come in public domain with his party MLA Vishwajeet Rane threatening to quit the Congress if the party does not go for grand alliance against the ruling BJP.

“Forget grand alliance, we are not even going for a simple alliance” Deshprabhu told goanews.com.

While independent MLA Vijai Sardesai had mooted the idea of grand alliance, expelled Congress MLA Babush Monseratte and Goa Vikas Party supremo Mickky Pacheco have supported the move.

In fact AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh had made a public appeal for homecoming to Sardesai, who had contested independent in 2012 election after he was denied Congress ticket.

“Such mistake won’t be committed. He is a Congressman and he should come back”, said Deshprabhu.

While appreciating Digvijay’s stand as the most appropriate and positive, Deshprabhu felt Mickky also should not feel as an outsider in the Congress.

“He was not expelled from the party like Babush. But the decision regarding Babush will have to be taken by party president Sonia Gandhi”, said the party spokesperson.

However, he also did not leave this opportunity to hit out at Vijai, Babush and Mickky.

“They should not dream of winning election by piggy-backing on the Congress. We are winning hands down even otherwise”, said the former Pernem MLA.

He also claimed that their differences with the Congress are not political in nature but purely personal.

“I expect them to have professional political approach and come back to the party fold”, said Deshprabhu.

When pointed out that Digvijay’s appeal to Vijai has been opposed by his own local party leaders, the party spokesperson said it was opposed by few individuals who have vested interest in keeping him away.

Interestingly, GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro had rubbished Digvijay’s appeal to Vijai as his personal opinion.
