We’ll come to save, if Govt intends to cut coconut trees: Pedne BJP
NIVRUTTI SHIRODKAR, PEDNE | 22 February 2016 20:31 IST

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party workers from Pedne have also come forward to express their love for coconut trees, but to protect Forest Minister Rajendra Arlekar more than the coconut.
The BJP Mandal committee of Pedne constituency today reacted sharply to the Maad Yatra held in their taluka yesterday, organised by Goa Forward, Congress and the independent MLAs.
“The frustrated opposition members are simply making politics of coconut since they have found no other issue to attack the ruling party”, claimed Krishna Gaude, president of Pedne Mandal committee.
The ‘coconut bill’ is definitely brought to allow cutting of coconut trees, but only those in ruinous state or which may fall any moment, not to cut 2000 trees in good condition for a distillery in Sanguem, he claimed.
In fact the BJP Mandal announced that they would go anywhere to save coconut trees if any such attempt is made even with the blessings of their own government.
The amendments to the Preservation of Trees Act are brought primarily to save the coconut trees and not to allow rampant cutting of the trees, he said.
Nagesh Gosawi, another local BJP leader, said the leaders from South Goa came here with a sole intention to try and woo the voters but did not succeed.
He also asked with what kind of love independent MLA Vijai Sardesai cut coconut trees to build his bungalow.
ZP member Ramesh Sawal also said the Maad Yatra was aimed not to save coconut trees but try and defame the BJP leaders like Rajendra Arlekar.
Pedne municipal chairperson Smita Kudtarkar, other councillors as well as local BJP leaders were also present in full strength at the press conference.
