Is Remo a Portuguese national? Police order inquiry over subordinate’s claim

Goa police have created confusion by calling India’s pop singer Remo Fernandes a Portuguese national, which police themselves are still not sure about.

While Agacaim police has requested its Foreigners’ Registration Regional Office (FRRO) to serve second summons to Remo at Indian Embassy in Portugal, the North Goa SP’s office has ordered the Panaji SDPO to verify and scrutinise all the details.

“There is still confusion and no clarity over the issue since Agacaim police has not furnished all the necessary details, including Remo’s address in Portugal”, North Goa SP Umesh Gaonkar told goanews.com.

The photo copy of the letter sent by Agacaim PI Jivaba Dalvi to FRRO was circulated on WhatsApp yesterday, making it big news in the media circles since Dalvi stated in the letter the police enquiry reveals that Remo is a Portuguese national.

The claim was also made by Adv Aires Rodrigues, who has filed a case under Goa Children’s Act against Remo, accusing him of verbally abusing a minor girl in GMC hospital.

The minor girl from Malwan in Konkan region of Maharashtra was knocked down by a car, driven by Remo’s son Jonah on 1 December.

While the girl underwent multiple surgeries due to serious injuries caused to her, Adv Rodrigues complained that Remo, who was in talks with the victim’s family to compromise the case, verbally abused the minor girl.

After he was served the summons, Remo had intimated that he is presently in Europe and would appear before the police when he returns.

Following this, PI Dalvi today issued second summons to Remo and attached it to the letter written to the FRRO with a request to serve it to him at Indian embassy in Lisbon, without mentioning any Lisbon-based address of Remo.

He also mentioned the Subject of the letter as “Portuguese national Luis Remo de Maria Bernardo Fernandes alias Remo Fernandes.”

Instead of forwarding the summons to the Indian embassy, the FRRO however referred the letter to the North Goa SP’s office for comment since it did not contain all the relevant details.

“I am not aware what inquiry the PI has conducted but the relevant details are not mentioned in the letter. I have now told Panaji SDPO to find out all the details”, said SP Gaonkar.

According to him, if Remo has opted for Portuguese nationality, then he has to surrender his Indian passport to the passport office, ration card to the Mamlatdar, election card to the election office etc.

“We also need to verify what address he has given in Portugal. We’ll come to know about it once a proper enquiry is conducted”, said the SP.
